BMW Spark Plug Connector Failure

Attention BMW owners of 1992 to 2005 vehicles!

Spark plug misfire, rough Idle, poor gas mileage, and/or performance! These are all symptoms of possible damaged or worn spark plug connectors. As the owner of one of these vehicles you may not be aware that your vehicle no longer has many of the ignition components such as the Distributor cap, Rotor, and spark plug wires, that were common of vehicles in the past. With new technology and the elimination of these components the service intervals of today's BMW's have been extended to well over double that of vehicles of just the last generation.

However as these vehicles' age some components will fail simply due to the normal wear and tear of high mileage. To the side is a photo of the direct fire coil unit that ignites one of the spark plug in your vehicle. The system incorporates a single coil for each cylinder. This ignition coil delivers the 50,000-volt spark to the spark plug via a resistor style spark plug connector. These connectors are a replaceable component of the ignition system. Over a period of time the resistors in the connector fails, allowing an open circuit condition. The result is a spark plug that misfires at idle or throughout the power band. Some connectors may show evidence of cracks or damage during spark plug replacement. Others simply fail due to a voltage leak, through the aging insulation, to the engine cylinder head. The result is a misfire.
