We just recently received a Magnum Force Intake system by AFE. This is a first for our 330i, e46 BMW project car series.
The kit is very well constructed. It is designed to replace the entire factory air box assembly. The kit included a reusable cone filter, powder-coated steel housing, billet aluminum "Velocity Stack" adapter, polished heat shield and all necessary hardware. After installation we noticed a slightly more aggressive intake sound. Although louder, it was not over powering (A real sporty sound). After our first driving impression, the manufacturers' claim of 20hp & 25lb/ft torque improvement over stock seems like a very realistic figure.
Install time is about 30 minutes for the average Do-it-yourselfer, requiring only a few sockets and a screwdriver selection. Installation steps were quite straightforward and can easily be done by anyone in his or her own garage.
You will start off by removing the factory air filter housing by removing the two screws shown below with a 10mm socket. Then unclip the two clips connecting the mass airflow sensor and intake housing.
Next just slide the stock air filter housing out of the car and set aside.
Underneath where the stock air filter housing was you will see a rubber cushion on the fender well. This needs to be removed.
Remove the o-ring from the stock air filter housing where the mass airflow sensor was connected. This needs to be installed on the inside of the smaller end of the billet aluminum adapter.
After you have installed the o-ring, you can now bolt the billet aluminum adapter to the powder-coated heat shield with the 4 supplied 4mm allen bolts.
Install the stock spring clips back onto the mass airflow sensor.
Reinstall the stock intake snorkel as shown below.
Attach filter to the billet aluminum adapter with the clamp and tighten.
Install polished heat shield to the top of the powder-coated heat shield using supplied 4mm allen bolts.
Enjoy the newly found 20hp & 25lb/ft torque on your favorite curvy country road.
