Project e21 320i Car
Update: Back from Paint
Our goal with this car is to make it like new, both mechanically and cosmetically. To have the car painted correctly the car needs to be de-trimmed as much as possible. This means, "Whatever you don't want painted needs to be removed". This includes all trim pieces, mirrors, windows, emblems etc. As mentioned in the pre-purchase check article, the car did have a few spots with rust that our body shop has removed and repaired. Prior to sending it to the body shop we did do some of the mechanical repairs to the vehicle to avoid exposing the vehicle to heavy repairs after the paintwork was completed. Since we wanted to make sure the front and rear glass would not break on removal, and having planned on replacing most of the rubber components we simply cut the windshield rubber to allow for easy glass removal.
The under hood paint was in good condition, so we opted to not remove the engine and paint the compartment. A thorough engine bay detail job should make it look very presentable. We had the fenders painted to inside the hood area where it attaches to the unibody. All of the rusted areas have now been repaired. The paint inside the trunk was worn and scratched, so we wanted to make sure it was repainted.
