This is very common on all 528i, 530i, 540i, M5 models. This problem does occur on other BMW 3,5,6,7, and 8 series but not as frequently. This problem is the result of severe pot hole impacts and worn shocks absorbers, which allow the vehicle to bottom out. The weight of the vehicle impacting the front upper shock mount will typically bend the upper mounts as well as the tower itself. You can visually see the damage by looking at the top of the mount which will appear bulged outward. Additionally the 3 mount studs are splayed outward from their original centerline location. Removal of the upper mount from the shock tower may require using an insulated hammer to drive the studs from the mount locations.
Visually inspecting the shock tower: The top surface of the shock tower should be a flat mounting surface. Studs should appear in a straight vertical position. Studs spread out are an indication of impact damage. Severe damage will require removal of the shock, and using the BMP design 2 part press tool. This tool will compress the shock tower to it's original position. Upon reassembly install a set of BMP shock tower reinforcement plates to help protect against future damage. Since this issue is quite common on the 5 series we recommend selecting a Bilstein Heavy duty shocks to reduce "shock bottoming" impact related damage
The BMP shock tower reinforcement plate kit includes two 3/16" steel reinforcement rings, three 3/16" heavy duty washers, and six extended length mounting studs. The plate fits between the upper shock mount and the vehicles shock tower. The 3 heavy duty washers fit on top. The combination will add 3/8" of solid steel to help prevent future damage.
