BMW models after 1988 are equipped with an onboard self-diagnostic computer that holds in storage a variety of engine and electronic component failure codes. Vehicles up to June of 2000 have a 20-pin connection plug located in the engine compartment. The later vehicles (after June 2000) to present have the 16-pin O.B.D. 2 connection located under the left side of the dashboard. Until recently, retrieving this information was possible only at your authorized BMW dealer. The equipment was cost prohibitive, and the codes were a closely held secret, guarded by your dealer's service department. The BMP fault code reader will retrieve almost any code. The codes are displayed on a 2-digit electronic display. As an added bonus, the same tool will reset the oil service and inspection service interval lights. The kit includes the electronic reset/code reader, a 20-page instruction and codebook, and a durable plastic storage case. The tool will diagnose problems ranging from a simple spark plug failure, to a more complicated vanos intake cam solenoid failure. Note-if you have several vehicles or have a repair shop, you should purchase the 161373 and the 161381 adapter. The later version will not read the older vehicles.
