BMW models after 1988 are equipped with an onboard self-diagnostic computer that holds in storage a variety of engine and electronic component failure codes. Vehicles up to June of 2000 have a 20-pin connection plug located in the engine compartment. The later vehicles (after June 2000) to present have the 16-pin O.B.D. 2 connection located under the left side of the dashboard. Until recently, retrieving this information was possible only at your authorized BMW dealer. The equipment was cost prohibitive, and the codes were a closely held secret, guarded by your dealer's service department. Note: This is only the 20 to 16 pin adapter (OBD1 to OBD2). This adapter only works with fault code reader 137677 which is a OBD1 20 pin reader for older model BMWs. This works well if you own both OBD1 and OBD2 BMW models. The actual fault code reader is sold seperately.
